Integrity & UN rights
Last November, the UN was preparing to end a decade of old tradition: making explicit reference to sexual orientation in its resolutions, and not least, since it is to condemn unfair Performances. After the vote, described as "homophobic" by the LGBT Center of Paris, the U.S. ambassador Susan Riceundertook to represent the amendment. It's finally done, and this time with a positive result.
93 votes for:
After a tumultuous debate, the amendment was passed with 93 votes for, 55 against and 27 abstentions, a majority more frank than that which had led to the deletion of reference in November. During discussions, Zimbabwe has made a homophobic remark by saying: "We can not agree, especially since it means accepting such practices as bestiality, pedophilia and other abhorrent practices . Meanwhile, the Group of African States, the Arab States and the Organization of the Islamic Conference declared their commitment to the protection of human rights and the resolution. The latter was then passed without any votes against.
