what's with the gay issue in the US?

We all know the las t two years were a little bit too controversial in many countries, like Iceland, Mexico and Australia, where gay rights have finally reached the ladder up to the congress and changed the constitutions, allowing gay couples to get marrid, and even to adopt kids in some countries.

Now, what's with the US? this country used to be the most liberal country on earth a few years ago, über open minded, and always moving forward and upwards with this kind of social issues. Now we're facing a divided country, one very liberal and looking forward to stay ahead of the competition (aka the rest of the world), and another part of it, where people are looking for a more christian America, straight couples with the american dream from the 50's (i.e.: "honey, I'm home"), and against immigration and/or different lifestyles.

This is über funny, mostly because the US (like ALL countries in America) was built by immigrants, with totally different lifestyles, different skin colors, and different beliefs... so what's with the old christian manifesto about anti gay rights, anti gay troops, and anti gay everything???

I do believe things can change, and they always do... dealing with people that believe in totally different things is also a part of our social evolution... but somehow I do feel sometimes we have reached a point when we have to tell our congressmen (and women) to deal with these new regulations, accepting gay rights (just like any other human being) and to face the new world reality as it is....
